After moving to Bondi recently and gaining a little outdoor space I realised that I could now grow a vege garden! I have been wanting to do this for years but never had the room or light so this was a very exciting change.
Last Friday I headed off to Bunnings and Plants R Us and stocked up. The raised wooden bed kit was a bargain (Bunnings $49) and it came with the screws, so it was basically ready to go.
I was also inspired by my recent little gardens for apartment dwellers post so I stocked up on ferns for indoors and flowers for a window box. I am drilling holes in an old enamel kettle next to plant my rosemary in.
The supplies! Lots of cow manure and potting mix and sugar cane mulch.
Once the bed was made I lined the base with black weed mat (a couple of dollars for a roll from Bunnings). This stops the weeds coming up from the grass and also helps prevent all the good stuff leaching into the grass.
My flower and vege selection – lots of tomatoes, strawberries, lettuces, herbs, jalapenos, ranunculas and geraniums.
I put a thick layer of sugarcane mulch on top of the weed mat as this acts as a bit of a filler so you don’t need so much potting mix. Then I alternated with layers of potting mix and cow manure. I think my bed, which is 1.2m x 1.2m, took around 10 bags of manure and 10 of potting mix.
The finished product! Looks pretty sparse now but I will keep you updated with the growth. Bring on summer!
